How Often Should a Private Water Supply Be Tested?

How often private water supplies are tested depends on regulation type, volume and risk assessment. Understand Regulation 8, 9 and 10 monitoring in England.

Why the answer is not “once a year”

Search results often reduce private water supply testing to a simple annual rule. That is misleading. DWI guidance divides monitoring by supply category and, for Regulation 9, by the volume of water supplied.

Regulation 9

DWI states that Regulation 9 supplies require Group A and Group B monitoring. The minimum frequency is once a year, but larger supplies may be sampled more often and additional parameters can be required by the risk assessment.

Regulation 8

For private distribution systems, monitoring should reflect the hazards and risk rating identified in the regulatory risk assessment.

Regulation 10

DWI says shared Regulation 10 supplies in England are monitored at least every five years and more frequently if the risk assessment requires it. Single-dwelling supplies are treated differently.

Operational planning

Keep the schedule issued by the local authority, create reminders from that schedule, and store each completed report. Do not use a web calculator as a substitute for the council’s programme.

Practical checklist

  • Record the confirmed supply category.
  • Record the council-agreed next sampling date.
  • Store sample locations and full lab reports.
  • Link any abnormal result to follow-up.
